Signs Your Leaf Spring Is Worn or Broken

Leaf springs are hidden away under the vehicle, so problems usually show up in how it drives long before you ever see them. Here's how to recognise a worn or broken leaf spring early — and what each sign actually means.

A leaf spring does two jobs at once: it carries the weight of your van, motorhome or pickup, and it holds the axle in the right place. When it starts to fail, both of those jobs are affected — which is why the warning signs show up as changes in ride height, handling and noise. Catching them early matters, because a partially damaged spring quietly accelerates wear on the rest of the suspension, and a fully broken one can become a safety problem.

Here are the signs worth paying attention to.


The back of the vehicle sits low or sags

This is the most common sign of a tired leaf spring. Over time the steel loses its temper and the spring settles, so the rear sits lower than it used to — often most obvious when the vehicle is loaded, or noticeable as one corner sitting lower than the other. Most leaf springs start to weaken like this after roughly 5–10 years, depending on how hard they've worked.

This isn't just cosmetic: it reduces clearance and changes the suspension geometry. If the spring is simply undersized for how you load the vehicle, a reinforcement kit or helper air spring can restore the ride height; if it has genuinely worn out, replacement is the answer. [Link]

When the whole rear sits low — not just one corner — the spring pack has usually settled along its full length. If the spring is otherwise sound but simply undersized for how you load the van, a reinforced spring or reinforcement kit brings the ride height back.

It sways, leans or squats under load, braking or cornering

If the rear feels floaty — leaning more than it used to through bends, squatting when you accelerate, or diving when you brake — the springs may no longer be stiff enough to control the body. You'll often feel this most with a load on board, and it tends to creep in gradually, so it's easy to get used to without noticing how far it has gone.

This is a handling and safety issue, not just comfort, because it changes how the vehicle behaves exactly when you need it predictable. Softened springs should be replaced; a vehicle that was always marginal under load is a good candidate for a heavy-duty spring or an auxiliary suspension system.


Squeaks, creaks, clunks or rattles from underneath

Noise is one of the earliest clues. A dry, squeaking or creaking sound over bumps usually points to worn or missing interleaf pads, or to spring bushings that have dried out or perished. A heavier clunk or rattle can mean loose U-bolts, worn shackle bushings, or a leaf that has shifted. (On heavy commercial springs a little squeak can be normal and hard to eliminate entirely — but a new or worsening noise is worth investigating.)

Because several parts make similar sounds, noise is a prompt to inspect rather than a diagnosis on its own — and worth doing before a loose or shifting spring damages anything else.


A harsh, bouncy or unstable ride

Leaf springs are built for load capacity rather than comfort, so some firmness when unladen is normal. But if the ride has become noticeably harsher, bouncier or less settled than it used to be, the spring may have lost its correct rate — either through age, or because a leaf is cracked and no longer flexing as designed.

The key word is change: a ride that has clearly worsened is telling you something. If a leaf has settled or failed, replacement restores the intended ride; if the harshness always bothered you, a supplementary air spring can take the edge off.


Visible cracks, heavy rust or a broken leaf

This is the one to take most seriously. If you can get a look at the spring, watch for cracks — often starting at the surface, around the centre bolt hole, or at the spring eye — as well as flaking rust, cracked protective coating, or a leaf that is clearly snapped or out of position. Corrosion matters more than it looks, because rust creates stress points where cracks start and then spread under load.

A cracked or broken leaf is a replace-it situation, not a "keep an eye on it" one. Even a single cracked leaf changes how load is shared across the pack — and when a spring breaks on one side and the vehicle keeps being used, the spring on the other side often ends up overloaded and breaks too.

The vehicle pulls to one side, or the axle looks off-centre

If the vehicle has started tracking to one side, sitting visibly crooked, or wearing one rear tyre unevenly, the axle may no longer be held square — typically because one spring has sagged much more than the other, or because a leaf has broken and let the axle shift. Uneven tyre wear at the rear is an easy sign to miss but a telling one.

Because the axle's location is compromised, this deserves prompt attention — left alone it wears tyres, upsets handling, and with a broken leaf can worsen quickly.

Is it safe to keep driving?

It depends entirely on what has failed. A slightly sagging or squeaking spring is usually safe to drive on in the short term while you arrange a replacement, as long as you're not carrying heavy loads and you take it easy.

A broken spring is a different matter. The most dangerous case is when a mono-leaf spring, or the main leaf of a multi-leaf pack, breaks between the axle and the front eye on a vehicle without a stabiliser (anti-roll) bar. In that situation the axle is no longer properly secured on that side, the opposite spring is suddenly overloaded, and the axle can shift out of place — a genuine loss-of-control risk. If you suspect this, move the vehicle only at minimal speed and get it to a workshop straight away.

If instead the main leaf is intact, or the break is between the axle and the rear eye, or only a secondary leaf is cracked, it may be possible to drive briefly and gently, unloaded — but the spring is still compromised and should be replaced without delay.


How to check it yourself

You don't need to dismantle anything for a first look. On level ground, compare the ride height left to right and against how it used to sit. Then, safely underneath, look along each spring for cracks, a snapped or displaced leaf and heavy rust, and check that the U-bolts, shackles and bushings look sound rather than loose or perished.

One maintenance note worth knowing: after any new spring is fitted, the U-bolts should be re-torqued after the first 500–1,000 km, because the pack settles slightly as it beds in. Loose U-bolts are a common cause of later trouble.


One thing not to do: don't weld it

It's tempting to weld a cracked leaf and carry on, but spring steel is heat-treated to a precise balance of strength and flexibility, and welding destroys that balance in the heat-affected zone. A welded spring becomes brittle at the joint and almost always breaks again — often within weeks, in the same place. No reputable manufacturer recommends it. A cracked or broken leaf spring should be replaced, not repaired.


Wear or a defect?

Most failures are simply the result of years of load, vibration, road salt and rough surfaces — rarely anything the driver did wrong. A spring that weakens after 5–10 years has usually just reached the end of its working life. A spring that loses its strength after only a few months is different: that normally points to a manufacturing or heat-treatment defect, and is typically a warranty matter with the spring's maker.
